SUMMARY:Adam Hochschild reads from Rebel Cinderella: From Rags to Riches to Radical\, the Epic Journey of Rose Pastor Stokes\,
DESCRIPTION:The astonishing but forgotten story of an immigrant sweatshop worker who married an heir to a great American fortune and became one of the most charismatic radical leaders of her time. \n“Through the lens of a remarkable marriage\, Adam Hochschild draws a vivid portrait of the Gilded Age–of immigrants\, sweatshops\, tenements\, strikes\, enclaves of patrician privilege\, and a ‘citadel of socialism’ on a private island. At the center of it all is Rose\, whose extraordinary story ends as anything but a fairy tale.”–Jean Strouse \nTo reserve your seat\, please purchase a copy of Rebel Cinderella by speaking to a bookseller or clicking on the cover below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRose Pastor arrived in New York City in 1903\, a Jewish refugee from Russia who had worked in cigar factories since the age of eleven. Two years later\, she captured headlines across the globe when she married James Graham Phelps Stokes\, scion of one of the legendary 400 families of New York high society. Together\, this unusual couple joined the burgeoning Socialist Party and\, over the next dozen years\, moved among the liveliest group of activists and dreamers this country has ever seen. Their friends and houseguests included Emma Goldman\, Big Bill Haywood\, Eugene V. Debs\, John Reed\, Margaret Sanger\, Jack London\, and W.E.B. Du Bois. Rose stirred audiences to tears and led strikes of restaurant waiters and garment workers. She campaigned alongside the country’s earliest feminists to publicly defy laws against distributing information about birth control\, earning her notoriety as “one of the dangerous influences of the country” from President Woodrow Wilson. But in a way no one foresaw\, her too-short life would end in the same abject poverty with which it began. \nBy a master of narrative nonfiction\, Rebel Cinderella unearths the rich\, overlooked life of a social justice campaigner who was truly ahead of her time. \nAdam Hochschild is the author of ten books. King Leopold’s Ghost was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award\, as was To End All Wars. His Bury the Chains was a finalist for the National Book Award and won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize and PEN USA Literary Award. He lives in Berkeley.

SUMMARY:Great Composers: In Search of Chopin
DESCRIPTION:Tue\, Mar 3 1 & 7pm\n\nTue\, Mar 24 4pm \nTo Purchase Tickets Click HERE \n“Gripping!” – The Times \n“Outstanding!” – Chicago Sun Times \n“A masterpiece!” – Sydney Morning Herald \n“A directional coup – inventively filmed and cooly perceptive” – New Zealand Herald \n“An indelible portrait offering a rich and personal insight into Chopin the man and his music” – Urbancinefile \nAcclaimed director Phil Grabsky brings the life and music of Fryderyk Chopin – one of the greatest composers of all time – to Rialto Cinemas. \nHis grave in Paris remains a place of pilgrimage and his music continues to sell out concert halls worldwide – but who exactly was this man who was terrified of public performance\, who fled his Polish homeland for Paris never to return\, took up with the most notorious transvestite in France\, rarely gave public performances and\, despite a life of ill-health\, wrote some of the deepest and most powerful music ever written? How exactly did a young Polish boy rise to such heady heights? \nFor four years\, award-winning Phil Grabsky travelled the globe in his quest to lay bare the life and music of Chopin. Some of the world’s best musicians provide the music\, including Leif Ove Andsnes\, Daniel Barenboim\, Ronald Brautigam and the Orchestra of the 18th Century. \nFunny\, heart-breaking\, inspirational – this film has been called the first to really illustrate the true nature of this remarkable and still widely-loved composer.

SUMMARY:EXHIBITION On Screen 2019/20 Season: Lucian Freud: A Self Portrait
DESCRIPTION:Wed\, Mar 4 1 & 7pm\n\nWed\, Mar 25 4pm \nTo Purchase Tickets Click HERE \nExploring one of the most highly original and popular artists of recent years – the grandson of Sigmund Freud – who was a key figure in London’s radical post-war art scene! \nFor the first time in history the Royal Academy of Arts in London\, in collaboration with the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston\, is bringing together Lucian Freud’s self-portraits. \nThe exhibition will display more than 50 paintings\, prints and drawings in which this modern master of British art turned his unflinching eye firmly on himself. One of the most celebrated painters of our time\, Lucian Freud is also one of very few 20th-century artists who portrayed themselves with such consistency. \nSpanning nearly seven decades his self-portraits give a fascinating insight into both his psyche and his development as a painter\, from his earliest portrait painted in 1939 to the final one executed 64 years later. When seen together\, his portraits represent an engrossing study into the dynamic of ageing and the process of self-representation. This intensely compelling exhibition creates a unique opportunity for EXHIBITION ON SCREEN to reveal the life’s work of a master in one show.
