SUMMARY:Indie Lens Pop-Up: Look & See Wendell Berry
DESCRIPTION:Indie Lens Pop-Up\nFree Showing!\n\nWed\, Apr 11 7pm \nLOOK & SEE revolves around the divergent stories of several residents of Henry County\, Kentucky who each face difficult choices that will dramatically reshape their relationship with the land and their community. \nIn 1965\, Wendell Berry returned home to Henry County\, where he bought a small farm house and began a life of farming\, writing and teaching. This lifelong relationship with the land and community would come to form the core of his prolific writings. A half century later Henry County\, like many rural communities across America\, has become a place of quiet ideological struggle. In the span of a generation\, the agrarian virtues of simplicity\, land stewardship\, sustainable farming\, local economies and rootedness to place have been replaced by a capital-intensive model of industrial agriculture characterized by machine labor\, chemical fertilizers\, soil erosion and debt – all of which have frayed the fabric of rural communities. Writing from a long wooden desk beneath a forty-paned window\, Berry has watched this struggle unfold\, becoming one of its most passionate and eloquent voices in defense of agrarian life. \nFilmed across four seasons in the farming cycle\, LOOK & SEE blends observational scenes of farming life\, interviews with farmers and community members with evocative\, carefully framed shots of the surrounding landscape. Thus\, in the spirit of Berry’s agrarian philosophy\, Henry County itself will emerge as a character in the film – a place and a landscape that is deeply interdependent with the people that inhabit it.

SUMMARY:Great Art On Screen: Hitler vs Picasso and the Others
DESCRIPTION:Wed\, Apr 4 1 & 7pm\n\nTo Purchase Tickets Click HERE \nThere are two ways Nazism put its hands on art: attempting to destroy every trace of the so-called “Degenerate Art” and implementing a systematic looting of classic and modern artworks. \nIn 1937 the Nazi regime held two exhibitions in Munich: one to stigmatize the “Degenerate Art” and one\, personally curated by Hitler\, to glorify the “Classic Art”. \nThis film is an amazing journey through 5 exhibitions displaying an incredible number of masterpieces by Botticelli\, Klee\, Matisse\, Monet\, Chagall\, Renoir\, Gauguin\, just to name a few. For more than thirty years\, Steve Martino has been committed to the development and advancement of landscape architecture in the Southwest. His pioneering work with native plant material and the development of a desert-derived design aesthetic is widely recognized. A recurring theme of his work is the dramatic juxtaposition of man-made elements with ecological processes of the region. His love for the desert–the interplay of light and shadow\, the colors\, plants\,and wildlife–inspires his work. \nCaren Yglesias is a licensed architect and professor of Landscape Design at UC Berkeley. She has taught landscape architecture at Virginia Tech\, University of Maryland\, and the Academy of Art University. SUMMARY:The Rape of Recy Taylor
DESCRIPTION:Recy Taylor\, a 24-year-old black mother and sharecropper\, was gang raped by six white boys in 1944 Alabama. Common in Jim Crow South\, few women spoke up in fear for their lives. Not Recy Taylor\, who bravely identified her rapists. The NAACP sent its chief rape investigator Rosa Parks\, who rallied support and triggered an unprecedented outcry for justice. \n\nOur film exposes a legacy of physical abuse of black women and reveals Rosa Parks’ intimate role in Recy Taylor’s story. An attempted rape against Parks was but one inspiration for her ongoing work to find justice for countless women like Taylor. The 1955 bus boycott was an end result\, not a beginning. \nMore and more women are now speaking up after rape. Our film tells the story of black women who spoke up when danger was greatest; it was their noble efforts to take back their bodies that led to the Montgomery Bus Boycott and movements that followed. The 2017 Global March by Women is linked to their courage. From sexual aggression on ’40s southern streets to today’s college campuses and to the threatened right to choose\, it is control of women’s bodies that powered the movement in Recy Taylor’s day and fuels our outrage today. \n\nA Benefit for Bay Area Women Against Rape

SUMMARY:Michael David Lukas reads from his new novel\, The Last Watchman of Old Cairo.
DESCRIPTION:“A beautiful\, richly textured novel\, ambitious and delicately crafted.”– Rabih Alameddine \n\n\n\n\n\nIn this spellbinding novel\, a young man journeys from California to Cairo to unravel centuries-old family secrets.\n\n\n\n\n\nJoseph\, a literature student at Berkeley\, is the son of a Jewish mother and a Muslim father. One day\, a mysterious package arrives on his doorstep\, pulling him into a mesmerizing adventure to uncover the tangled history that binds the two sides of his family. For generations\, the men of the al-Raqb family have served as watchmen of the storied Ibn Ezra Synagogue in Old Cairo\, built at the site where the infant Moses was taken from the Nile. Joseph learns of his ancestor Ali\, a Muslim orphan who nearly a thousand years earlier was entrusted as the first watchman of the synagogue and became enchanted by its legendary–perhaps magical–Ezra Scroll. The story of Joseph’s family is entwined with that of the British twin sisters Agnes and Margaret\, who in 1897 depart their hallowed Cambridge halls on a mission to rescue sacred texts that have begun to disappear from the synagogue. \nThe Last Watchman of Old Cairo is a moving page-turner of a novel from acclaimed storyteller Michael David Lukas. This tightly woven multigenerational tale illuminates the tensions that have torn communities apart and the unlikely forces–potent magic\, forbidden love–that boldly attempt to bridge that divide. \nMichael David Lukas is the author of the internationally bestselling novel The Oracle of Stamboul\, which was a finalist for the California Book Award\, the Northern California Independent Booksellers Association Book of the Year Award\, and the Harold U. Ribalow Prize\, and has been published in fifteen languages. He has been a Fulbright Scholar in Turkey\, a student at the American University of Cairo\, and a night-shift proofreader in Tel Aviv. A graduate of Brown University\, he has received a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts\, and his writing has appeared in The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. He works in the Center for Middle Eastern Studies at UC Berkeley and lives in Oakland.

SUMMARY:Joyce Carol Oates reads from her new collection of short stories\, Beautiful Days\, which includes the 2017 Pushcart Prize-winning "Undocumented Alien."
DESCRIPTION:In the diverse stories of Beautiful Days\, Joyce Carol Oates explores the most secret\, intimate\, and unacknowledged interior lives of characters not unlike ourselves\, who assert their independence in acts of bold and often irrevocable defiance. \n“Fleuve Bleu” exemplifies the rich sensuousness of Oates’s prose as lovers married to other persons vow to establish\, in their intimacy\, a ruthlessly honest\, truth-telling authenticity missing elsewhere in their complicated lives\, with unexpected results. In “Big Burnt\,” set on lushly rendered Lake George in the Adirondacks\, a cunningly manipulative university professor exploits a too-trusting woman in a way she could never have anticipated. In a more experimental but no less intimate mode\, “Les beaux jours” examines the ambiguities of an intensely erotic\, exploitative relationship between a “master” artist and his adoring young female model. And the tragic “Undocumented Alien” depicts a young African student enrolled in an American university who is suddenly stripped of his student visa and forced to undergo a terrifying test of courage. \nIn these stories\, as elsewhere in her fiction\, Joyce Carol Oates exhibits her fascination with the social\, psychological\, and moral boundaries that govern our behavior–until the hour when they do not.
