SUMMARY:Stephanie Kuehn & Brandy Colbert in Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating the double launch for their YA novels just releasing: When I Am Through with You (“A tense\, masterful thriller that gripped me from the first page.”–Kara Thomas\, author of The Darkest Corners) and Little & Lion (“Beautifully insightful\, honest\, and compassionate.”–Nicola Yoon)\, respectively. \n\n\n\n\nThese two YA authors form a Mutual Admiration Society\, so what could be better than to pair them as their new books come out? \nWhen I Am Through with You: a gripping story of survival and the razor’s-edge difference between perfect cruelty and perfect love. \nBen Gibson is many things\, but he’s not sorry and he’s not a liar. He will tell you exactly about what happened on what started as a simple school camping trip in the mountains. About who lived and who died. About who killed and who had the best of intentions. But he’s going to tell you in his own time. Because after what happened on that mountain\, time is the one thing he has plenty of. \nSmart\, dark\, and twisty\, When I Am Through With You will leave readers wondering what it really means to do the right thing. \nStephanie Kuehn is the critically acclaimed author of four young adult novels\, including Charm & Strange\, which won the ALA’s William C. Morris Award for best debut novel. Booklist has praised her work as “Intelligent\, compulsively readable literary fiction with a dark twist.” She lives in Northern California and is a post-doctoral fellow in clinical psychology. \nLittle & Lion: a stunning novel on love\, loss\, identity\, and redemption. (Starred reviews from Kirkus\, Publishers Weekly\, and School Library Journal.) \nWhen Suzette comes home to Los Angeles from her boarding school in New England\, she isn’t sure if she’ll ever want to go back. L.A. is where her friends and family are (along with her crush\, Emil). And her stepbrother\, Lionel\, who has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder\, needs her emotional support. \nBut as she settles into her old life\, Suzette finds herself falling for someone new…the same girl her brother is in love with. When Lionel’s disorder spirals out of control\, Suzette is forced to confront her past mistakes and find a way to help her brother before he hurts himself—or worse. \nBrandy Colbert is the author of the young adult novel Pointe\, which was named a best book of the year by Publishers Weekly\, Book Riot\, the Chicago and Los Angeles public libraries\, and Bank Street\, as well as a Popular Paperback by the American Library Association. Her short fiction and essays have been published in several critically acclaimed anthologies. She lives and writes in Los Angeles. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Julia Glass reads from her new novel\, A House Among the Trees
DESCRIPTION:The story of an unusual bond between a world-famous writer and his assistant–a richly plotted novel of friendship and love\, artistic ambition\, the perils of celebrity\, and the power of an unexpected legacy.\n\n\n\n\n“Radiant . . . Warmhearted . . . Grippingly readable . . . [Glass’s] conclusion finds room for compromise and mutual fulfillment among her full-bodied\, compassionately rendered characters.” — Kirkus Reviews (starred review) \n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen the revered children’s book author Mort Lear dies accidentally at his Connecticut home\, he leaves his property and all its contents to his trusted assistant\, Tomasina Daulair\, who is moved by his generosity but dismayed by the complicated and defiant directives in his will. Tommy knew Morty for more than four decades\, since meeting him in a Manhattan playground when she was twelve and he was working on sketches for the book that would make him a star. By the end of his increasingly reclusive life\, she found herself living in his house as confidante and helpmeet\, witness not just to his daily routines but to the emotional fallout of his strange boyhood and his volatile relationship with a lover who died of AIDS. Now Tommy must try to honor Morty’s last wishes while grappling with their effects on several people. \nJULIA GLASS is the author of five previous books of fiction\, including the best-selling Three Junes\, winner of the National Book Award\, and I See You Everywhere\, winner of the Binghamton University John Gardner Fiction Book Award. A recipient of fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts\, the New York Foundation for the Arts\, and the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study\, Glass is a Distinguished Writer in Residence at Emerson College. SUMMARY:Sylvia Brownrigg in Conversation with Peggy Orenstein
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, July 11\, 2017 – 7:30pm \nDiscussing Brownrigg’s new novel\, Pages for Her\, the story of two women\, Flannery and Anne\, each at a personal turning point\, and the circumstances that lead to their reunion. \n\n\n\n\n“Brownrigg . . . approaches her characters with clarity and sensitivity\, capturing the nuances in the women’s relationships to the people they love–as mother\, daughter\, sister\, friend\, wife\, or lover–and the power they give those people to define and inspire them . . . Brownrigg considers motherhood\, romance\, identity\, and the changes brought by time in this tender\, insightful novel.”–Kirkus Reviews (starred review) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTwenty years after their brief but passionate affair\, chronicled in Brownrigg’s earlier novel\, Pages for You\, Flannery has the chance once again to meet Anne\, who opened young Flannery up to the possibility of love–then left her heartbroken. \nHaving long ago put their love behind them\, they live now on opposite coasts. Anne has been in a deep\, childless partnership with a fellow scholar\, Jasper\, who recently left her. Flannery\, to her own surprise\, married a charismatic artist named Charles\, with whom she has a young daughter. Submerged by her husband’s demands and personality and her adjustment to motherhood\, Flannery has lost sight of her self and her work. When the two women meet at a conference\, they find that the passion and understanding between them has endured\, though it has been hidden. In rediscovering each other\, they are able to rediscover themselves. \nPages for Her is an exhilarating\, passionate work that explores marriage\, sexuality\, and the transformative power of love over time. \nSylvia Brownrigg is the author of several acclaimed works of fiction: four novels– Morality Tale\, The Delivery Room\, winner of the Northern California Book Award\, Pages for You\, winner of the Lambda Award\, and The Metaphysical Touch–and a collection of stories\, Ten Women Who Shook the World. She lives in Berkeley. \nPeggy Orenstein is the author of Cinderella Ate My Daughter\, Waiting for Daisy\, Flux\, Schoolgirls and\, most recently\, Girls & Sex.

A radical from the wilderness on hunger strike. A girl whose mysterious dance will change the course of the world. This charged retelling turns the infamous biblical tale on its head\, placing the girl we call Salomé at the centre of a revolution. \nInternationally acclaimed theatre director Yaël Farber (Les Blancs) draws on multiple accounts to create her urgent\, hypnotic production. ‘Epic. SUMMARY:The Royal Ballet: The Dream / Symphonic Variations / Marguerite and Armand
DESCRIPTION:Wed\, June 28 1 & 7pm\n\nThe Royal Ballet brings its celebrations of 70 years at the Royal Opera House to a close with a mixed programme of works by its Founder Choreographer Frederick Ashton. \nThis gorgeous mixed programme demonstrates the great creative vision of Frederick Ashton\, Founder Choreographer of The Royal Ballet. The Dream is Ashton’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s riotous comedy in which a forest sprite plays havoc\, armed with a love potion. Symphonic Variations was Ashton’s first work after World War II\, and one of the Company’s first to be performed on the huge main stage of the Royal Opera House\, in 1946. With six dancers performing a series of quartets\, duets\, sextets and solos to Franck’s brooding Variations symphoniques\, this seminal masterpiece celebrates the pure beauty of movement. Marguerite and Armand is Ashton’s beautiful and emotional retelling of a well-known story\, familiar to us through Verdi’s opera La traviata. Ashton famously created this poignant ballet on Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev in 1963. \nChoreography Frederick Ashton\nMusic Felix Mendelssohn\, Cesar Franck and Franz Liszt

SUMMARY:Thomas Centolella presents his new poetry collection\, Almost Human
DESCRIPTION:Thomas Centolella presents his new poetry collection\, Almost Human\, winner of the Dorset Prize\, selected by Edward Hirsch. \n\n\n\n\nAs in a profound love affair\, Thomas Centolella’s new poems register attraction\, delight\, expectations fulfilled and foiled\, and moments of great feeling cherished and/or lamented. Employing the vividness of narrative without yielding to its linear strictures and overly familiar tonalities\, many of the first person protagonists in Almost Human are mysterious figures at once engaging and idiosyncratic\, even outright eccentric. Often betwixt and between\, neither here nor there\, they are uncertain of actually getting anywhere. Almost Human documents the restive life-force incarnated in an endangered species—our own—and charts the movement of the self between spirit and human\, recalling the idea\, attributed to Teilhard de Chardin\, that we aren’t human beings having a spiritual experience but spiritual beings having a human experience.

SUMMARY:Thad Carhart reads from his delightful memoir\, Finding Fontainebleau: An American Boy in France
DESCRIPTION:Thad Carhart reads from his delightful memoir\, Finding Fontainebleau: An American Boy in France\, just out in paperback. \n\n\n\n\n“While bringing alive this redolent Gallic chapter of his boyhood (baguettes from the boulangerie; inkwells and laborious handwriting exercises at school)\, Mr. Carhart also resurrects the mood and mores of a particular window in time: the 1950s of Ike and Elvis’s America\, and postwar France. . . . Like the castle\, his memoir imaginatively and smoothly integrates multiple influences\, styles and whims.”–The New York Times \n\n\n\n\n\nThursday\, June 8\, 2017 – 7:30pm\n\n\n\n\n\nFor a young American boy in the 1950s\, Fontainebleau was a sight both strange and majestic\, home to a continual series of adventures: a different language to learn\, weekend visits to nearby Paris\, family road trips to Spain and Italy. Then there was the chateau itself: a sprawling palace once the residence of kings\, its grounds the perfect place to play hide-and-seek. The curiosities of the small town and the time with his family as expats left such an impression on him that thirty years later Carhart returned to France with his wife to raise their two children. Touring Fontainebleau again as an adult\, he began to appreciate its influence on French style\, taste\, art\, and architecture. Each trip to Fontainebleau introduces him to entirely new aspects of the chateau’s history\, enriching his memories and leading him to Patrick Ponsot\, the head of the chateau’s restoration\, who becomes Carhart’s guide to the hidden Fontainebleau. \nWhat emerges is an intimate chronicle of a time and place few have experienced. In warm\, precise prose\, Carhart reconstructs the wonders of his childhood as an American in postwar France\, attending French schools with his brothers and sisters. His firsthand account brings to life nothing less than France in the 1950s\, from the parks and museums of Paris to the rigors of French schooling to the vast chateau of Fontainebleau and its village\, built\, piece by piece\, over many centuries. Finding Fontainebleau is for those captivated by the French way of life\, for armchair travelers\, and for anyone who has ever fallen in love with a place they want to visit over and over again. \nThe son of an air force officer\, Thad Carhart grew up in a variety of places\, including Washington\, D.C.; Fontainebleau\, France; Minneapolis; Amherst\, Massachusetts; and Tokyo. After graduating from Yale\, he worked for the State Department as an interpreter. He is also the author of The Piano Shop on the Left Bank and Across the Endless River\, a historical novel. He lives in Paris.

SUMMARY:Rosalind Rosenberg reads from Jane Crow: The Life of Pauli Murray\,
DESCRIPTION:Rosalind Rosenberg reads from Jane Crow: The Life of Pauli Murray\, “a fascinating look at the incredible life of Pauli Murray\, a mixed-race\, transgender scholar\, lawyer\, activist\, priest\, and trailblazer who played a pivotal role in the civil rights and women’s movements of the 20th century.”– The Advocate \n\n\n\nThursday\, June 1\, 2017 – 7:30pm\n\n\n\n\n\nJane Crow tells the incredible story of Pauli Murray\, a lawyer\, activist\, and priest. Murray spent her life fighting for women’s and civil rights\, all while grappling with gender identity at a time when gender dysphoria was unrecognized. Though Murray is a relatively unknown figure today\, her stunning list of accomplishments included providing legal scholarship in the landmark Brown v. Board of Education case\, assisting Ruth Bader Ginsburg in persuading the Supreme Court that the Fourteenth Amendment should apply to protecting both women and other minority groups from discrimination\, and becoming the first black woman ordained as a priest by the Episcopal Church. \nThe New Yorker  recently published a big piece on Murray and the book: “Historical figures aren’t human flotsam\, swirling into public awareness at random intervals. Instead\, they are almost always borne back to us on the current of our own times. In Murray’s case\, it’s not simply that her public struggles on behalf of women\, minorities\, and the working class suddenly seem more relevant than ever. It’s that her private struggles—documented for the first time in all their fullness by Rosenberg—have recently become our public ones.” \nRosalind Rosenberg is Professor of History Emerita at Barnard College\, Columbia University. She is the author of Divided Lives: American Women in the Twentieth Century\, Changing the Subject: How the Women of Columbia Shaped the Way We Think About Sex and Politics\, and Beyond Separate Spheres: Intellectual Roots of Modern Feminism.
