SUMMARY:Bolshoi Ballet 2019/20 Season: Romeo and Juliet (Encore)
DESCRIPTION:Wed\, Apr 1 1 & 7pm\n\nTo Purchase Tickets Click HERE \nSergei Prokofiev\nEkaterina Krysanova and Vladislav Lantratov\nChoreography by Alexei Ratmansky \nDespite each of their families being merciless enemies\, Romeo and Juliet are deeply in love. The rivalry between the two families will cost Mercutio’s life\, causing Romeo a desire of vengeance for the loss of his friend. \nThe star-crossed lovers’ tragic fate inspired Prokofiev’s remarkable cinematic score\, from the delicate theme of Juliet to the ominous Dance of the Knights. Bolshoi stars Ekaterina Krysanova and Vladislav Lantratov wholly embody the two eternal lovers in Alexei Ratmansky’s stunning evocation of love at first sight.

SUMMARY:Jane Hirshfield reads from her new volume of poetry Ledger
DESCRIPTION:Jane Hirshfield reads from her new volume of poetry Ledger\, a book of personal\, ecological\, and political reckoning from the internationally renowned poet named “among the modern masters” (Washington Post). \n\n\n\n\nFrom one of our most celebrated contemporary poets–long-listed for the National Book Award and a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award and England’s T.S. Eliot Prize–comes Jane Hirshfield’s Ledger\, her most important work yet. From its already much-quoted opening lines of despair and defiance (“Let them not say: we did not see it. / We saw.”)\, Hirshfield’s poems inscribe a registry\, both personal and communal\, of our present-day predicaments\, and call us to action. They summon our responsibility to sustain one another and the earth while pondering\, acutely and tenderly\, the crises of refugees\, justice\, and climate. They consider “the minimum mass for a whale\, for a language\, an ice cap\,” recognize the intimacy of interconnection (“lichens\, burdocks\, mycelial mats between trees– / forgive this hubris”)\, and apply the lever of questions (“How came separation to chisel\, / to cherish\, to chafe?”) by which we might begin to find a way forward. Finally\, it is the human spirit and words themselves–loyal instruments of recognition\, humility\, and praise–that triumph in this stunning accounting by an essential poet. \nJane Hirshfield is the author of nine books of poetry\, including Ledger; The Beauty; Come\, Thief; and Given Sugar\, Given Salt. She is also the author of two now-classic collections of essays\, Nine Gates and Ten Windows\, and has edited and co-translated four books of world poets from the past. Her books have received the Poetry Center Book Award\, the California Book Award\, and the Donald Hall-Jane Kenyon Prize in American Poetry. Hirshfield has received fellowships from the Guggenheim and Rockefeller foundations\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, and the Academy of American Poets\, and presents her work at literary and interdisciplinary events worldwide. Her poems appear in The New Yorker\, The Atlantic\, The New York Review of Books\, The Times Literary Supplement\, The Washington Post\, The New York Times\, New Republic\, Harper’s\, and Poetry\, and have been selected for ten editions of The Best American Poetry. A resident of Northern California\, she is a 2019 elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a former chancellor of the Academy of American Poets.

SUMMARY:Bonnie Tsui presents Why We Swim
DESCRIPTION:Bonnie Tsui presents Why We Swim\, “a beautifully written love letter to water and a fascinating story” (Rebecca Skloot).\n\n\n\n\nTo reserve your seat\, please purchase a copy of Why We Swim by speaking to a bookseller or clicking on the cover below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nHumans\, unlike other animals that are drawn to water\, are not natural-born swimmers. We must be taught. Our evolutionary ancestors learned for survival; now in the twenty-first century we swim in freezing Arctic waters and piranha-infested rivers to test our limits. Swimming is an introspective and silent sport in a chaotic and noisy age; it’s therapeutic for both the mind and body; and it’s an adventurous way to get from point A to point B. It’s also one route to that elusive\, ecstatic state of flow. These reasons\, among many others\, make swimming one of the most popular activities in the world. Why We Swim is propelled by stories of Olympic champions\, a Baghdad swim club that meets in Saddam Hussein’s palace pool\, modern-day Japanese samurai swimmers\, and even an Icelandic fisherman who improbably survives a wintry six-hour swim after a shipwreck. New York Times contributor Bonnie Tsui\, a swimmer herself\, dives into the deep\, from the San Francisco Bay to the South China Sea\, investigating what about water–despite its dangers–seduces us and why we come back to it again and again. \nBonnie Tsui lives\, swims\, and surfs in the Bay Area. A longtime contributor to the New York Times and California Sunday Magazine\, she has been the recipient of the Jane Rainie Opel Young Alumna Award from Harvard University\, the Lowell Thomas Gold Award\, and a National Press Foundation Fellowship. Her last book\, American Chinatown\, won the Asian/Pacific American Award for Literature and was a San Francisco Chronicle bestseller and Best of 2009 Notable Bay Area Books selection. DESCRIPTION:Wed\, Apr 29 1 & 7pm\n\nTo Purchase Tickets Click HERE \nGabriel Faure\, Igor Stravinsky and Pytor Ilyich Tchaikovsky\nChoreography by George Balanchine \nThis opulent triptych was inspired by Balanchine’s visit to the famous jeweller Van Cleef & Arpels on New York’s Fifth Avenue\, celebrating the cities and dance schools of Paris\, New York and St. Petersburg\, each bound to its own precious stone: emerald\, ruby and diamond. \nBalanchine built an homage of captivating beauty to the three dance schools that had forged his style\, each represented by a contrasting gemstone. Jewels offers a unique occasion to enjoy the genius of choreographer’s visually captivating work performed by some of the world’s most dazzling dancers in a broadcast to Rialto Cinemas.

SUMMARY:Great Composers: In Search of Haydn
DESCRIPTION:Wed\, Apr 15 1 & 7pm\n\nWed\, May 6 4pm \nTo Purchase Tickets Click HERE \n“Joyous\, thrilling\, informative\, accessible!” – Empire \n“An ideal introduction to one of the greatest composers of his time!” – BBC Music Magazine \n“Bracing\, refreshing…simply very good indeed!” – Guardian \nPhil Grabsky’s biographical account of Haydn’s life is a visual and aural extravaganza\, including breath-taking performances by some of the world’s most celebrated musicians. \nBy speaking to some of the greatest exponents of Haydn’s music\, this film redresses the balance and sheds light on the master and his work. Haydn’s life spanned from the end of the Baroque period to Napoleon’s invasion of Vienna\, outliving his younger friend Mozart. He was one of the most prolific composers\, producing more than 100 symphonies\, 64 quartets\, 16 extant operas\, 51 piano sonatas and the oratorios ‘The Creation’ and ‘The Seasons’. \nThrough intimate and revealing interviews with experts and detailed extracts from Haydn’s personal recollections\, the audience gains tremendous insight not only into Haydn’s music but an appreciation of the artist himself. \nThe emphasis of the film\, as with all the ‘In Search Of’ films\, is on the performance – and interpretation – of the works of Haydn\, the composer both Mozart and Beethoven looked up to.

SUMMARY:EXHIBITION On Screen 2019/20 Season: Frida Kahlo
DESCRIPTION:Wed\, July 15 1 & 7pm\n\nWed\, July 29 4pm \nTo Purchase Tickets Click HERE \nA highly researched and visually spectacular feature-length film on this 21st-century female icon! \nThis highly engaging film takes us on a journey through the life of one of the most prevalent female icons: Frida Kahlo. She was a prolific self-portraitist\, using the canvas as a mirror through all stages of her turbulent and\, at times\, tragic life. Guided with interview\, commentary and Frida’s own words\, EXHIBITION ON SCREEN uncovers that this\, however\, was not a life defined by tragedy. \nFeaturing key exhibitions and interviews with world-renowned Kahlo curators\, EXHIBITION ON SCREEN explores the extraordinary symbolism and themes in these personal canvases to seek a deeper understanding of the real Frida Kahlo. \nUsing cinema to take an up-close and intimate look at her works we examine how great an artist she can be considered. Displaying a treasure trove of colour and a feast of vibrancy on screen\, this personal and intimate film offers privileged access to her works and highlights the source of her feverish creativity\, her resilience and her unmatched lust for life\, men\, women\, politics and her cultural heritage. \nWe might think we already know Frida Kahlo – the image of floral crowns\, big brows and folk style clothing have made her a muse to generations – but what lies beneath the surface of this intensely passionate woman?

SUMMARY:Are you a musician? A Call for Musicians
DESCRIPTION:The Elmwood Business Association (EBA)\, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit\, is sponsoring “Music in the Elmwood” Sunday April 28th 2024 12pm-5pm.\n\nThe purpose of “Music in the Elmwood” is to support Elmwood merchants\, restaurants\, musicians and give back to the community through the celebration of music. The live music will be outdoors. The style is a concentration of street performers in various locations with enough space for crowds to gather & enjoy the music.  All musicians will benefit by the exposure they will receive at this event\, busking\, sale of any of your material\, & promotion of your future engagements is encouraged.  Given the “street performance” nature of the event\, bands with their own portable sound equipment\, with moderate amplification\, due to space constraints\, sound permitting issues\, may have a better opportunity of being selected for this event. We can provide a power source at most locations.\n\nWe are inviting the residents of the surrounding Berkeley\, Oakland\, neighborhoods to join us for an amazing day of music\, entertainment\, sales\, kid’s activities\, and more.\nTo apply to be a musician for our event\, please apply:  https://forms.gle/V2oo9nYGqAdtk9Sj7 \n
