SUMMARY:Tessa Hadley returns to Mrs. Dalloway's to read from her new novel\, Late in the Day.
DESCRIPTION:“Perceptive\, finely wrought….Hadley is a writer of the first order\, and this novel gives her the opportunity to explore\, with profound incisiveness and depth\, the inevitable changes inherent to long-lasting marriages.”– Publishers Weekly \nTo reserve your seat\, purchase a copy of Late in the Day by speaking to a bookseller or ordering from our website. \n\n\n\n\n\nThe lives of two close-knit couples are irrevocably changed by an untimely death in this latest from Hadley. Alexandr and Christine and Zachary and Lydia have been friends since they first met in their twenties. Thirty years later\, Alex and Christine are spending a leisurely summer’s evening at home when they receive a call from a distraught Lydia: she is at the hospital. Zach is dead.\n\n\n\n\n\nIn the wake of this profound loss\, the three friends find themselves unmoored; all agree that Zach\, with his generous\, grounded spirit\, was the irreplaceable one they couldn’t afford to lose. Inconsolable\, Lydia moves in with Alex and Christine. But instead of loss bringing them closer\, the three of them find over the following months that it warps their relationships\, as old entanglements and grievances rise from the past\, and love and sorrow give way to anger and bitterness. \nLate in the Day explores the complex webs at the center of our most intimate relationships\, to expose how\, beneath the seemingly dependable arrangements we make for our lives\, lie infinite alternate configurations. Ingeniously moving between past and present and through the intricacies of her characters’ thoughts and interactions\, Tessa Hadley once again “crystallizes the atmosphere of ordinary life in prose somehow miraculous and natural.” (Washington Post) \nTessa Hadley is the author of five highly praised novels: Accidents in the Home\, Everything Will Be All Right; The Master Bedroom; The London Train\, and Clever Girl\, and two short story collections\, Sunstroke and Married Love. Her stories appear regularly in The New Yorker. She lives in London.

SUMMARY:Horn From The Heart The Paul Butterfield Story
DESCRIPTION:Horn From The Heart The Paul Butterfield Story\n\nTo Purchase Tickets Click HERE \n“Paul was an incredible creative spirit and always kept stretching. As deep as he would go into the roots\, he was always pushing the envelope of what blues can be.” – Bonnie Raitt \nPaul learned the blues from the original black masters performing nightly in his own back yard. Muddy Waters was Paul’s mentor and lifelong friend\, happy to share his wisdom and expertise with such a gifted young acolyte. \nThe interracial Paul Butterfield Blues Band\, featuring the twin guitar sound of Michael Bloomfield and Elvin Bishop\, the rhythm section of Sam Lay and Jerome Arnold and the keyboards of Mark Naftalin\, added a rock edge to the Chicago blues\, bringing an authenticity to its sound that struck a chord with the vast white rock audience and rejuvenated worldwide interest in the blues. The band’s first LP\, released in 1965\, was named “#11 Blues Album of All Time” by Downbeat. \nThrough his music and words\, along with first‐hand accounts of his family\, his band mates and those closest to him\, Horn From The Heart: The Paul Butterfield Story tells the complex story of a man many call the greatest blues harmonica player of all time. \nThe Paul Butterfield Blues Band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015. Paul Butterfield is one of a handful of musicians inducted into both the Rock and Roll and Blues Halls of Fame\, alongside other legendary artists including B.B. King\, Chuck Berry\, Billie Holiday and Eric Clapton.

SUMMARY:The King and I from the West End
DESCRIPTION:Thu\, Dec 13 1 & 7pm\n\nTue\, Dec 18 7pm \nTo Purchase Tickets Click HERE \n★★★★ “Looks and sounds ravishing. Complete rapture.” The Telegraph \nWe are excited to bring the critically-acclaimed The King and I: Live to Riatlo Cinemas\, with ‘Broadway’s undisputed Queen’ (The Sunday Times) Kelli O’Hara (The Bridges of Madison County\, Nice Work if You Can Get It\, The Light in the Piazza) stealing the show in the role of a lifetime as Ann Leonowens and Ken Watanabe (Inception\, The Last Samurai\, Memoirs of a Geisha) playing the part of the King of Siam. \nThe much-loved musical tells the story of an unconventional and tempestuous relationship which develops between the King of Siam and Anna. After the huge success of Lincoln Center Theater’s production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The King and I\, the production extended its engagement for a final three weeks at London’s iconic Palladium\, where this cinema broadcast was filmed.

SUMMARY:EXHIBITION On Screen 2018/19 Season: Degas - Passion for Perfection
DESCRIPTION:Wed\, Nov 7 & Wed\, Dec 12\n\nPick Six and Save!\nPick Ten and Save More! \nTo Purchase Tickets Click HERE \nEXHIBITION ON SCREEN journeys from the streets of Paris to the heart of a superb exhibition at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge\, whose extensive collection of Degas’ works is the most representative in Britain. With exclusive access to view rare and diverse works\, this film tells a fascinating story of Degas’ pursuit for perfection through both experimentation with new techniques and lessons learnt from studying the past masters. \nSometimes frustrated by his own failings\, Degas was consumed by obsessive principles and failing eye sight but his determination to capture everyday life was evident in every mark he made. Never fully satisfied\, many of Degas’ drawings and sculptures were kept in private during his lifetime but\, now through close examination\, they can be seen as some of the most beautifully detailed and expressive works in the modern era. Using written accounts by friends and commentators\, and the narration of letters written by Degas himself\, this film reveals a more complex truth behind one of the most influential French artists of the late 19th-century and serves as an exploration of the complex workings of Degas’ artistic mind. \n“Art is not a matter of what you see\, but what you make other people see.” Edgar Degas

DESCRIPTION:Launch party for his terrific new novel The Dakota Winters\, an evocative and wildly absorbing story about the Winters\, a family living in New York City’s famed Dakota apartment building in the year leading up to John Lennon’s assassination. \n\n\n\n\n“Deft\, funny\, touching\, and sharply observed\, a marvel of tone\, and a skillful evocation of a dark passage in the history of New York City\, when all the fearful ironies of the world we live in now first came stalking into view.”–Michael Chabon \n\n\n\n\n\n\nIt’s the fall of 1979 in New York City when twenty-three-year-old Anton Winter\, back from the Peace Corps and on the mend from a nasty bout of malaria\, returns to his childhood home in the Dakota. Anton’s father\, the famous late-night host Buddy Winter\, is there to greet him\, himself recovering from a breakdown. Before long\, Anton is swept up in an effort to reignite Buddy’s stalled career\, a mission that takes him from the gritty streets of New York\, to the slopes of the Lake Placid Olympics\, to the Hollywood Hills\, to the blue waters of the Bermuda Triangle\, and brings him into close quarters with the likes of Johnny Carson\, Ted and Joan Kennedy\, and a seagoing John Lennon. \nBut the more Anton finds himself enmeshed in his father’s professional and spiritual reinvention\, the more he questions his own path\, and fissures in the Winter family begin to threaten their close bond. By turns hilarious and poignant\, The Dakota Winters is a family saga\, a page-turning social novel\, and a tale of a critical moment in the history of New York City and the country at large. \nTom Barbash is the award-winning author of three books as well as numerous reviews\, stories essays\, and articles for publications including McSweeney’s\, Tin House\, the Believer\, Narrative Magazine\, One Story\, StoryQuarterly\, Zyzzyva\, the Missouri Review\, Story Magazine\, Men’s Journal\, ESPN the Magazine\, BookForum\, and the New York Times. He teaches at California College of the Arts. \n

SUMMARY:Vijaya Nagarajan presents Feeding a Thousand Souls: Women\, Ritual and Ecology in India--An Exploration of the Kolam
DESCRIPTION:Vijaya Nagarajan presents Feeding a Thousand Souls: Women\, Ritual and Ecology in India–An Exploration of the Kolam\, the first comprehensive book in English on the kolam\, a ritual rice flour drawing created by Tamil women.\n\n\n\n\nTo reserve your seat\, purchase a copy of Feeding a Thousand Souls by speaking to a bookseller or ordering via our website. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvery day millions of Tamil women in southeast India wake up before dawn to create a kolam\, an ephemeral ritual design made with rice flour\, on the thresholds of homes\, businesses and temples. This thousand-year-old ritual welcomes and honors Lakshmi\, the goddess of wealth and alertness\, and Bhudevi\, the goddess of the earth. Created by hand with great skill\, artistry\, and mathematical precision\, the kolam disappears in a few hours\, borne away by passing footsteps and hungry insects. \nThis book examines the kolam’s significance in historical\, mathematical\, ecological\, anthropological\, and literary contexts. The culmination of Vijaya Nagarajan’s many years of research and writing on this exacting ritual practice\, Feeding a Thousand Souls celebrates the experiences\, thoughts\, and voices of the Tamil women who keep this tradition alive. \nVijaya Nagarajan is an associate professor in the Department of Theology/Religious Studies and in the Program of Environmental Studies at the University of San Francisco. She lives in Berkeley.

SUMMARY:Keeping Values & Sharing Stories @Claremont
DESCRIPTION:Native People lived in California for thousands of years. They had no books\, and indeed no written language. Yet complex stories were passed down from one generation to the next\, skills were transmitted without instruction manuals\, children were taught what they needed to know. The retention and transmission of knowledge\, beliefs\, and values are essential to the survival of a culture\, too important to be left to chance. Malcolm Margolin will tell stories and give examples of how people kept knowledge and transmitted values in a world without books or schools.
