SUMMARY:The Royal Ballet: The Dream / Symphonic Variations / Marguerite and Armand
DESCRIPTION:Wed\, June 28 1 & 7pm\n\nThe Royal Ballet brings its celebrations of 70 years at the Royal Opera House to a close with a mixed programme of works by its Founder Choreographer Frederick Ashton. \nThis gorgeous mixed programme demonstrates the great creative vision of Frederick Ashton\, Founder Choreographer of The Royal Ballet. The Dream is Ashton’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s riotous comedy in which a forest sprite plays havoc\, armed with a love potion. Symphonic Variations was Ashton’s first work after World War II\, and one of the Company’s first to be performed on the huge main stage of the Royal Opera House\, in 1946. With six dancers performing a series of quartets\, duets\, sextets and solos to Franck’s brooding Variations symphoniques\, this seminal masterpiece celebrates the pure beauty of movement. Marguerite and Armand is Ashton’s beautiful and emotional retelling of a well-known story\, familiar to us through Verdi’s opera La traviata. Ashton famously created this poignant ballet on Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev in 1963. \nChoreography Frederick Ashton\nMusic Felix Mendelssohn\, Cesar Franck and Franz Liszt

SUMMARY:Thomas Centolella presents his new poetry collection\, Almost Human
DESCRIPTION:Thomas Centolella presents his new poetry collection\, Almost Human\, winner of the Dorset Prize\, selected by Edward Hirsch. \n\n\n\n\nAs in a profound love affair\, Thomas Centolella’s new poems register attraction\, delight\, expectations fulfilled and foiled\, and moments of great feeling cherished and/or lamented. Employing the vividness of narrative without yielding to its linear strictures and overly familiar tonalities\, many of the first person protagonists in Almost Human are mysterious figures at once engaging and idiosyncratic\, even outright eccentric. Often betwixt and between\, neither here nor there\, they are uncertain of actually getting anywhere. Almost Human documents the restive life-force incarnated in an endangered species—our own—and charts the movement of the self between spirit and human\, recalling the idea\, attributed to Teilhard de Chardin\, that we aren’t human beings having a spiritual experience but spiritual beings having a human experience.

SUMMARY:Thad Carhart reads from his delightful memoir\, Finding Fontainebleau: An American Boy in France
DESCRIPTION:Thad Carhart reads from his delightful memoir\, Finding Fontainebleau: An American Boy in France\, just out in paperback. \n\n\n\n\n“While bringing alive this redolent Gallic chapter of his boyhood (baguettes from the boulangerie; inkwells and laborious handwriting exercises at school)\, Mr. Carhart also resurrects the mood and mores of a particular window in time: the 1950s of Ike and Elvis’s America\, and postwar France. . . . Like the castle\, his memoir imaginatively and smoothly integrates multiple influences\, styles and whims.”–The New York Times \n\n\n\n\n\nThursday\, June 8\, 2017 – 7:30pm\n\n\n\n\n\nFor a young American boy in the 1950s\, Fontainebleau was a sight both strange and majestic\, home to a continual series of adventures: a different language to learn\, weekend visits to nearby Paris\, family road trips to Spain and Italy. Then there was the chateau itself: a sprawling palace once the residence of kings\, its grounds the perfect place to play hide-and-seek. The curiosities of the small town and the time with his family as expats left such an impression on him that thirty years later Carhart returned to France with his wife to raise their two children. Touring Fontainebleau again as an adult\, he began to appreciate its influence on French style\, taste\, art\, and architecture. Each trip to Fontainebleau introduces him to entirely new aspects of the chateau’s history\, enriching his memories and leading him to Patrick Ponsot\, the head of the chateau’s restoration\, who becomes Carhart’s guide to the hidden Fontainebleau. \nWhat emerges is an intimate chronicle of a time and place few have experienced. In warm\, precise prose\, Carhart reconstructs the wonders of his childhood as an American in postwar France\, attending French schools with his brothers and sisters. His firsthand account brings to life nothing less than France in the 1950s\, from the parks and museums of Paris to the rigors of French schooling to the vast chateau of Fontainebleau and its village\, built\, piece by piece\, over many centuries. Finding Fontainebleau is for those captivated by the French way of life\, for armchair travelers\, and for anyone who has ever fallen in love with a place they want to visit over and over again. \nThe son of an air force officer\, Thad Carhart grew up in a variety of places\, including Washington\, D.C.; Fontainebleau\, France; Minneapolis; Amherst\, Massachusetts; and Tokyo. After graduating from Yale\, he worked for the State Department as an interpreter. He is also the author of The Piano Shop on the Left Bank and Across the Endless River\, a historical novel. He lives in Paris.

SUMMARY:The American Dream
DESCRIPTION:Adrenaline pumping\, non-stop emotional roller coaster The American Dream embarks on a journey with two college bound football buddies. The two soon discover the importance of coming into their own. Keith and DJ\, the teams nucleus have been friends since Pop-Warner. They dreamed about being the highlight on ESPN\, on the field Keith and DJ’s talents shine the same. Off the field the two buddies don’t share the same lifestyles. Their biggest fan Marvin (Marcus D. Spencer)\, DJ’s uncle has been a supporter of the two boys since they first put on a helmet. As solid as DJ’s family was his father (Antoine Davis) who is a detective\, ordered the pair to steer clear of Marvin and his not so righteous ways. Keith always lacking in family support looks up to Marvin and wants to do a good job. One day Keith brings home a big black bag and his mother aims to teach her son a lesson. SUMMARY:Rosalind Rosenberg reads from Jane Crow: The Life of Pauli Murray\,
DESCRIPTION:Rosalind Rosenberg reads from Jane Crow: The Life of Pauli Murray\, “a fascinating look at the incredible life of Pauli Murray\, a mixed-race\, transgender scholar\, lawyer\, activist\, priest\, and trailblazer who played a pivotal role in the civil rights and women’s movements of the 20th century.”– The Advocate \n\n\n\nThursday\, June 1\, 2017 – 7:30pm\n\n\n\n\n\nJane Crow tells the incredible story of Pauli Murray\, a lawyer\, activist\, and priest. Murray spent her life fighting for women’s and civil rights\, all while grappling with gender identity at a time when gender dysphoria was unrecognized. Though Murray is a relatively unknown figure today\, her stunning list of accomplishments included providing legal scholarship in the landmark Brown v. Board of Education case\, assisting Ruth Bader Ginsburg in persuading the Supreme Court that the Fourteenth Amendment should apply to protecting both women and other minority groups from discrimination\, and becoming the first black woman ordained as a priest by the Episcopal Church. \nThe New Yorker  recently published a big piece on Murray and the book: “Historical figures aren’t human flotsam\, swirling into public awareness at random intervals. Instead\, they are almost always borne back to us on the current of our own times. In Murray’s case\, it’s not simply that her public struggles on behalf of women\, minorities\, and the working class suddenly seem more relevant than ever. It’s that her private struggles—documented for the first time in all their fullness by Rosenberg—have recently become our public ones.” \nRosalind Rosenberg is Professor of History Emerita at Barnard College\, Columbia University. She is the author of Divided Lives: American Women in the Twentieth Century\, Changing the Subject: How the Women of Columbia Shaped the Way We Think About Sex and Politics\, and Beyond Separate Spheres: Intellectual Roots of Modern Feminism.

SUMMARY:The Royal Ballet: The Dream/Symphonic Variations/Marguerite and Armand
DESCRIPTION:The Royal Ballet: The Dream/Symphonic Variations/Marguerite and Armand – Wed\, May 24 at 1 & 7pm \nThe Royal Ballet brings its celebrations of 70 years at the Royal Opera House to a close with a mixed programme of works by its Founder Choreographer Frederick Ashton. \n

SUMMARY:Allegiance
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by the true life experience of its star George Takei\, Allegiance follows one family’s extraordinary journey in this untold American story. \nAllegiance illuminates one of American history’s lesser known chapters as it tells the story of Sam Kimura (George Takei\, Star Trek\, “Heroes”)\, transported back nearly six decades to when his younger self (Telly Leung\, Godspell\, “Glee”) and his sister Kei (Tony Award-winner Lea Salonga\, Miss Saigon\, Mulan) fought to stay connected to their heritage\, their family and themselves after Japanese Americans were wrongfully imprisoned during World War II. An important story told with great resonance and intimacy\, Allegiance explores the ties that bind us\, the struggle to persevere and the overwhelming power of forgiveness and\, most especially\, love.

SUMMARY:The Royal Ballet: Jewels
DESCRIPTION:George Balanchine’s timeless evocation of the brilliance and sparkle of emeralds\, rubies and diamonds. \nGeorge Balanchine’s evocation of the sparkle of emeralds\, rubies and diamonds is a brilliant ballet classic. The French Romantic music of Faure provides the impetus for the subtlety and lyricism of ‘Emeralds’\, while the fire of ‘Rubies’ comes from Stravinsky and the jazz-age energy of New York. Grandeur and elegance complete the ballet with the splendour of Imperial Russia and the peerless music of Tchaikovsky in ‘Diamonds’. \nJewels is a masterclass in the many luminous facets of classical ballet and indeed of The Royal Ballet itself: the virtuoso choreography of Balanchine\, the intensity of the soloists and the precision of the entire Company.
