SUMMARY:The Wines of Domaine Courbet: Our Winemaker of the Year!
DESCRIPTION:Taste seven wines from the biodynamic producer from France’s Jura region we’ve declared our Greatest Single Astonishment of 2017. Sandwiched between Burgundy and the Swiss alps\, the Jura is France’s smallest wine region… and responsible for some of the most idiosyncratic and delicious wines in the world. This “new” (to us) Jurassic producer properly blew our minds\, and after considerable deliberation\, we decided we’re willing to share.

SUMMARY:Terry Shames in Conversation with Timothy Hallinan
DESCRIPTION:Launching Shames’s new Samuel Craddock mystery\, A Reckoning in the Back Country. \n\n\n\nThursday\, January 11\, 2018 – 7:30pm\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen Lewis Wilkins\, a physician with a vacation home in Jarrett Creek\, is attacked by vicious dogs\, and several pet dogs in the area around Jarrett Creek disappear\, Police Chief Samuel Craddock suspects that a dog fighting ring is operating in his territory. He has to tread carefully in his investigation\, as lawmen who meddle in dog fighting put their lives at risk. The investigation is hampered because Wilkins is not a local. \nCraddock’s focus on the investigation is thrown off by the appearance of a new woman in his life\, as well as his accidental acquisition of a puppy. \nDigging deeper\, Craddock discovers that the public face Wilkins presented was at odds with his private actions. A terrible mistake led to his disgrace as a physician\, and far from being a stranger\, he has ongoing acquaintances with a number of county residents who play fast and loose with the law. \nTerry Shames is the author of A Killing at Cotton Hill\, The Last Death of Jack Harbin\, Dead Broke in Jarrett Creek\, A Deadly Affair at Bobtail Ridge\, The Necessary Murder of Nonie Blake\, and An Unsettling Crime for Samuel Craddock\, the first six Samuel Craddock mysteries. She grew up in Texas and continues to be fascinated by the convoluted loyalties and betrayals of the small town where her grandfather was the mayor. A member of the Mystery Writers of America and Sisters in Crime\, she lives in Berkeley. \nTimothy Hallinan is the author of the Simeon Grist Los Angeles\, Junior Bender and Poke Rafferty mystery series.

SUMMARY:Marilyn Yalom Presents The Amorous Heart: An Unconventional History of Love.
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\n\n\nThe symmetrical\, exuberant heart is everywhere: it gives shape to candy\, pendants\, the frothy milk on top of a cappuccino\, and much else. How can we explain the ubiquity of what might be the most recognizable symbol in the world? In The Amorous Heart\, Yalom tracks the heart metaphor and heart iconography across two thousand years\, through Christian theology\, pagan love poetry\, medieval painting\, Shakespearean drama\, Enlightenment science\, and into the present. She argues that the symbol reveals a tension between love as romantic and sexual on the one hand\, and as religious and spiritual on the other. Ultimately\, the heart symbol is a guide to the astonishing variety of human affections\, from the erotic to the chaste and from the unrequited to the conjugal.\n\n\n\n\n\nMarilyn Yalom is a senior scholar at the Clayman Institute for Gender Research at Stanford University\, and the author of How the French Invented Love\, among other books.
