SUMMARY:Leslie Jonath Presents Foraged Art: Creating Projects Using Blooms\, Branches\, Leaves\, Stones\, and Other Elements Discovered in Nature.
DESCRIPTION:  \nTo reserve your seat\, purchase a copy of Foraged Art by speaking to a bookseller or ordering from our website. \n\n\n\n\n\nThursday\, June 14\, 2018 – 7:30pm\n\n\n\n\n\nIn the spirit of land artists like Andy Goldsworthy\, the book is as much about discovery as it is about creation. Divided into chapters by natural elements–flowers\, leaves\, rocks and pods\, and more\, the book encourages readers to forage and play outside using nature’s seasonal art box. With quotes by artists on nature and creativity\,Foraged Art is about making art from what you find and finding art in what you see. \nLeslie Jonath is an author\, book packager\, and producer specializing in content for food\, art\, design\, and children’s projects. She is the author of many books including Snowmen\, Everyone Loves Paris\, Give Yourself A Gold Star and Love Found. She lives in San Francisco.

SUMMARY:David Ulrich presents Zen Camera: Creative Awakening with a Daily Practice of Photograph
DESCRIPTION:An unprecedented photography practice that guides you to the creativity at your our fingertips\, calling for nothing more than your vision and any camera\, even the one embedded in your phone. \n“Zen Camera is to photographers what The Artist’s Way is to writers. This master class in creativity deserves a place in your home.”–Create with Joy \nTo reserve your seat\, purchase a copy of Zen Camera by speaking to a bookseller or ordering from our website. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nDavid Ulrich draws on the principles of Zen practice as well as forty years of teaching photography to offer six profound lessons for developing your self-expression. Doing for photography what The Artist’s Way and Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain did for their respective crafts\, Zen Camera encourages you to build a visual journaling practice called your Daily Record in which photography can become a path of self-discovery. Beautifully illustrated with 83 photographs\, its insights into the nature of seeing\, art\, and personal growth allow you to create photographs that are beautiful\, meaningful\, and uniquely your own. \nYou’ll ultimately learn to change the way you interact with technology–transforming it into a way to uncover your innate power of attention and mindfulness\, to see creatively\, and to live authentically. \n\nDavid Ulrich is a professor and co-director of Pacific New Media Foundation in Honolulu\, Hawai’i. He teaches frequent classes and workshops\, and is an active photographer and writer whose work has been published in numerous books and journals including Aperture\, Manoa\, and Sierra Club publications. Ulrich’s photographs have been exhibited internationally in more than 75 one-person and group exhibitions. He blogs about creativity and consciousness at www.theslenderthread.org\, and is a consulting editor for Parabola magazine. Visit his website at: www.creativeguide.com.

SUMMARY:Mark Greenside Reads from (not quite) Mastering the Art of French Living
DESCRIPTION:Mark Greenside Reads from (not quite) Mastering the Art of French Living\, a sequel of sorts to I’ll Never Be French (no matter what I do)\, about which the San Francisco Chronicle wrote: “Imagine Larry David . . . spending a summer in a French village–against his will\, of course–and you get some sense of what Mark Greenside goes through.” \n\n\n\n\nEvery year upon arriving in Plobien\, the small Breton town where he spends his summers\, Mark Greenside picks back up where he left off with his faux-pas-filled Francophile life. Mellowed and humbled\, but not daunted (OK\, slightly daunted)\, he faces imminent concerns: What does he cook for a French person? Who has the right-of-way when entering or exiting a roundabout? Where does he pay for a parking ticket? And most dauntingly of all\, when can he touch the tomatoes? \nDespite the two decades that have passed since Greenside’s snap decision to buy a house in Brittany and begin a bi-continental life\, the quirks of French living still manage to confound him. Continuing the journey begun in his 2009 memoir about beginning life in France\, (Not Quite) Mastering the Art of French Living details Greenside’s daily adventures in his adopted French home\, where the simplest tasks are never straightforward but always end in a great story. Through some hits and lots of misses\, he learns the rules of engagement\, how he gets what he needs–which is not necessarily what he thinks he wants–and how to be grateful and thankful when (especially when) he fails\, which is more often than he can believe. \nMark Greenside has been a civil rights activist\, Vietnam War protestor\, anti-draft counselor\, Vista Volunteer\, union leader\, and college professor. His short stories have appeared in numerous journals and he is the author of a collection\, I Saw a Man Hit His Wife. Greenside resides in Alameda and Brittany.

SUMMARY:Surprise Me! How the Unexpected Powers Your Writing with Author Ann Jacobus
DESCRIPTION:This is a Society of Children’s Book Writers & Illustrators event\, and it is open to the public. All writers are welcome! To reserve your seat\, buy a ticket. \n\n\n\n\nWe may crave order and predictability in our lives\, but in stories and poetry\, humans of all ages thrive on surprise. In fact\, an area of our brains is hard-wired to derive pleasure from it. Why? Because the unexpected shakes up our assumptions. Employed well\, it hooks and engages the reader\, gives pleasure\, shapes and then transforms the reader’s perceptions\, and is one of\, if not the most\, fundamental elements of story. \nJoin us as author Ann Jacobus uses examples from children’s fiction\, ranging from Dav Pilkey to Rainbow Rowell\, and exercises involving our current projects\, to explore how the unexpected works in almost all elements of writing: in language; in humor; as an integral part of character\, and as a powerful engine for plot. Understanding how and why surprise works is guaranteed to make us stronger writers. \nAnn Jacobus is the author of YA novel\, Romancing the Dark in the City of Light (Macmillan 2015)\, a suicide crisis line counselor\, mom\, writing teacher\, and reader. She earned an MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults from VCFA\, and has published short stories\, poetry\, essays\, and recently completed a chapter book for younger readers that’s currently on submission. She lives in San Francisco with her family and dog Louie\, and enjoys long walks and binge-watching cable series.

SUMMARY:Indie Bookstore Day--all day!
DESCRIPTION:Independent Bookstore Day is a one-day national party that takes place at indie bookstores across the country on the last Saturday in April. Every store is unique and independent\, and every party is different. But in addition to authors\, live music\, cupcakes\, scavenger hunts\, kids events\, art tables\, readings\, barbecues\, contests\, and other fun stuff\, there are exclusive books and literary items that you can only get on that day. Not before. Not after. Not online. Come join the party! \n\n\n\n\nIndependent bookstores are not just stores\, they’re community centers and local anchors run by passionate readers. They are entire universes of ideas that contain the possibility of real serendipity. They are lively performance spaces and quiet places where aimless perusal is a day well spent. \nIn a world of tweets and algorithms and pageless digital downloads\, bookstores are not a dying anachronism. They are living\, breathing organisms that continue to grow and expand. In fact\, there are more of them this year than there were last year. And they are at your service. \nFor more information\, and to view the special items offered on this day\, visit http://www.indiebookstoreday.com/ \nOur audio partner\, Libro.fm\, is offering 5 free audiobooks on that day as well. See details: https://libro.fm/ibd. \nAt 3 p.m. Georgeanne Brennan presents Windows on Provence: Musings on the Food\, Wine\, and Culture of the South of France. See next listing for details.
