SUMMARY:Jacqueline Winspear reads from her latest Maisie Dobbs adventure\, In This Grave Hour.
DESCRIPTION:Jacqueline Winspear reads from her latest Maisie Dobbs adventure\, In This Grave Hour. \n\n\n\n\n“A female investigator every bit as brainy and battle-hardened as Lisbeth Salander.”–Maureen Corrigan\, NPR’s Fresh Air \n\n\n\n\n\n\nSunday September 3rd 1939. At the moment Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain broadcasts to the nation Britain’s declaration of war with Germany\, a senior Secret Service agent breaks into Maisie Dobbs’ flat to await her return. Dr. Francesca Thomas has an urgent assignment for Maisie: to find the killer of a man who escaped occupied Belgium as a boy\, some twenty-three years earlier during the Great War. \nIn a London shadowed by barrage balloons\, bomb shelters and the threat of invasion\, within days another former Belgian refugee is found murdered. And as Maisie delves deeper into the killings of the dispossessed from the “last war\,” a new kind of refugee — an evacuee from London — appears in Maisie’s life. The little girl billeted at Maisie’s home in Kent does not\, or cannot\, speak\, and the authorities do not know who the child belongs to or who might have put her on the “Operation Pied Piper” evacuee train. They know only that her name is Anna. \nAs Maisie’s search for the killer escalates\, the country braces for what is to come. Britain is approaching its gravest hour — and Maisie could be nearing a crossroads of her own. \nJacqueline Winspear is the author of the bestselling Maisie Dobbs series\, which includes Journey to Munich\, A Dangerous Place\, Leaving Everything Most Loved\, Elegy for Eddie\, and eight other novels. Her standalone novel\, The Care and Management of Lies\, was also a bestseller and a Dayton Literary Peace Prize finalist. Originally from the United Kingdom\, she now lives in California.

SUMMARY:
DESCRIPTION:Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter\, The Woman in Black)\, Joshua McGuire (The Hour) and David Haig (Four Weddings and a Funeral\, The Witness for the Prosecution) star in Tom Stoppard’s brilliantly funny situation comedy\, captured live from The Old Vic theatre in London. \nAgainst the backdrop of Hamlet\, two hapless minor characters\, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern\, take centre stage. As the young double act stumble their way in and out of the action of Shakespeare’s iconic drama\, they become increasingly out of their depth as their version of the story unfolds. \nDavid Leveaux’s new production marks the 50th anniversary of the play that made a young Tom Stoppard’s name an overnight sensation.

SUMMARY:Exhibition On Screen: The Artist's Garden: American Impressionism
DESCRIPTION:“An artist’s interest in gardening is to produce pictures without brushes.” Anna Lea Merritt \n\nFollowing the smash hit Painting the Modern Garden: movement followed its own path which over a thirty-year Monet to Matisse from Season 3 comes a new film based on the hugely popular exhibition ‘The Artist’s Garden: American Impressionism and the Garden Movement\, 1887–1920’ from the Florence Griswold Museum in Connecticut\, widely considered a home of American Impressionism. \nTaking its lead from French artists like Renoir and Monet\, the American impressionist period reveals as much about America as a nation as it does about its art as a creative power-house. It’s a story closely tied to a love of gardens and a desire to preserve nature in a rapidly urbanizing nation. Traveling to studios\, gardens and famous locations throughout the United States\, UK and France\, this mesmerizing film is a feast for the eyes.

SUMMARY:Joan Frank reads from her new novel\, All the News I Need\, winner of the Juniper Prize for Fiction administered by UMass Press.
DESCRIPTION:Joan Frank reads from her new novel\, All the News I Need\, winner of the Juniper Prize for Fiction admiistered by UMass Press. \n\n\n\n\n“A deep dive into the heart of friendship\, of memory and regret\, of aging and loss… redemptive and wholly satisfying surprises…Joan Frank has gifted us with two unforgettable characters in a novel filled to bursting with hard truths and shimmering beauty.”—Bob Wake\, Cambridge Review \n\n\n\n\n\nWednesday\, April 19\, 2017 – 7:30pm\n\n\n\n\n\nA story of love and sex and friendship\, of art and travel—and of those small changes\, within our reach\, that may help us save ourselves—somewhere toward the end. \n“This wholly original novel asks and answers the most urgent of all questions: how are we to live? In precise\, pointillist prose\, Joan Frank humbly delivers an unforgettable and unconventional love story with characters who both define and defy the rules of aging. Beneath the surface of these deceptively quiet pages lies a barely containable exuberance\, a life-force I found moving and inspiring.”—Christopher Castellani \nJoan Frank is also the award-winning author of Because You Have To: A Writing Life\, and Make It Stay\, among other novels and story collections. A reviewer of literary fiction for the San Francisco Chronicle\, she lives in Northern California.

SUMMARY:The Royal Opera: Madama Butterfly
DESCRIPTION:Antonio Pappano conducts an impressive cast led by Ermonela Jaho in Puccini’s deeply poignant opera. \nPuccini’s Madama Butterfly is one of the most popular of all operas\, with ravishing music and a heartbreaking story of a loving geisha deserted by a callous American husband. Much-loved soprano Ermonela Jaho sings the title role for the first time at Covent Garden\, in Moshe Leiser and Patrice Caurier’s stunningly beautiful production. \nThe exotic imagery of the Nagasaki setting is drawn from 19th-century Western artists’ romanticized views of Japan. Puccini’s music brings alive the birdsong of the morning\, the ritual of a wedding and the seduction by naval officer B.F. Pinkerton (sung by exciting young tenor Marcelo Puente) of his young\, innocent bride. Well known moments include the impassioned aria ‘Un bel di’ (One fine day) as the abandoned Cio-Cio-San clings vainly to her dreams. \nRoyal Opera Music Director Antonio Pappano\, acclaimed for his interpretations of Italian opera\, conducts this intense and gripping journey from light and excitement to darkness and self-sacrifice.

SUMMARY:Edie Meidav discussing Kingdom of the Young
DESCRIPTION:Edie Meidav in Conversation with Larry Bensky discussing Meidav’s story collection\, Kingdom of the Young. \n\n\n\n\n“Ambitious\, original\, deliciously philosophical. Kingdom of the Young invites comparison to the cronicas of Clarice Lispector and the fabulas of Italo Calvino.”–Carolyn Cooke\, author of Daughters of the Revolution \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe dynamic characters in Kingdom of the Young are searching: for adventure\, work\, love\, absolution\, better chances elsewhere. In a symphonic stream of consciousness\, a fanatical child army loses faith in its commander as he ages unforgivably into his thirties. A woman possessed with wanderlust and a small inheritance seeks love among the cave-dwelling Roma in Granada. Traumatized war veterans run local rackets; smarmy bureaucrats rise through the ranks of repressive regimes; civilians attempt to escape the stranglehold of life under dictatorships. From the honeycombed caves outside the Alhambra to the streets of Havana\, from hospital wards to quinceanera parties\, these stories–along with the collection’s illuminating nonfiction coda–testify to Meidav’s vast imaginative range. \nEdie Meidav is the author of three novels–The Far Field\, Crawl Space\, and Lola\, California. Her honors include a Lannan Literary Award\, the Kafka Award for Best Novel by an American Woman\, the Bard Fiction Prize\, a Whiting Award\, and a Howard Fellowship. She teaches at the UMass MFA program and lives in Amherst. \nLarry Bensky is a Berkeley journalist\, radio host\, political activist\, educator\, and Proust scholar

SUMMARY:A Sixteen Rivers Press Launch Celebration with Poets Erin Rodoni and Gillian Wegener
DESCRIPTION:Reading from new collections\, Body\, in Good Light and This Sweet Haphazard\, respectively.\n\n\n\nAbout Erin Rodoni’s Body\, in Good Light: \nThroughout this debut collection\, Rodoni distills experience for its essence\, rendered in language that is fierce\, tender\, penetrating in its precision\, and astonishing in its turns of phrase. Whether describing “turncoat cells” of cancer\, the half-smile scar of a  caesarian\, or the alien landscape of childhood seared by wildfire\, Rodoni’s poems remind us how tenuous our lives are\, how each moment arrives as inescapably painful and miraculous as birth.

SUMMARY:National Theatre Live Presents Twelfth Night
DESCRIPTION:Tamsin Greig is Malvolia in a new twist on Shakespeare’s classic comedy of mistaken identity. \nA ship is wrecked on the rocks. So begins a whirlwind of mistaken identity and unrequited love. \nThe nearby households of Olivia and Orsino are overrun with passion. SUMMARY:1984: A Nationwide event
DESCRIPTION:On April 4\, 2017\, over 180 art house movie theatres across the country in 165 cities and in 43 states\, plus five locations in Canada\, one in England\, and one in Swedenftower will be participating collectively in a NATIONAL EVENT DAY screening of the 80’s movie 1984 starring John Hurt\, who sadly died last month. This date was chosen because it’s the day George Orwell’s protagonist Winston Smith begins rebelling against his oppressive government by keeping a forbidden diary. These theaters owners also strongly believe in supporting the National Endowment for the Arts and see any attempt to scuttle that program as an attack on free speech and creative expression through entertainment. This event provides a chance for communities around the country to show their unity and have their voices heard.

SUMMARY:Harriett Scott Chessman reads The Lost Sketchboook of Edgar Degas
DESCRIPTION:Harriet Scott Chessman reads from her new novel\, The Lost Sketchbook of Edgar Degas\, a lyrical novel about what art can reveal\, and a nuanced imagining of the people who influenced Degas and his work.\n\n\n\n\n“A beautiful meditation on the interplay of art\, time\, and memory\, that is itself a luminous portrait of a woman without vision who is just beginning to see.” Ann Packer\, author of The Children’s Crusade and Swim Back to Me \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTen years after Edgar Degas’s 1872 visit to New Orleans\, a lost sketchbook surfaces. His Creole cousin Tell- who lost her sight as a young woman–listens as her former child-servant describes the drawings and reads the artist’s enigmatic words. It is both cryptic and revelatory\, leading Tell to new understandings of her broken marriage\, her difficult\, brilliant cousin Edgar\, her daughter Josephine\, and herself. \nHarriet Scott Chessman s the author of the acclaimed novels The Beauty of Ordinary Things\, Someone Not Really Her Mother\, Lydia Cassatt Reading the Morning Paper\, and Ohio Angels. She is also the author of the libretto for My Lai\, a contemporary operatic piece commissioned by Kronos Quartet in 2015. She has taught literature and creative writing at Yale University\, Bread Loaf School of English\, and Stanford University’s Continuing Studies Program. \n\n

SUMMARY:The Royal Opera: Trovatore
DESCRIPTION:The Royal Opera: Trovatore\n\nNew Production!\nWed\, Feb 22 1 & 7pm \nThe first revival of David Bosch’s new production\, conducted by Richard Farnes and starring Dmitri Hvorostovsky\, Anita Rachvelishvili\, Lianna Haroutounian and Gregory Kunde. \nInternational superstars Dmitri Hvorostovsky\, Anita Rachvelishvili\, Lianna Haroutounian and Gregory Kunde lead a superb cast of world-class singers in this Verdi classic. \nIl trovatore is one of the great operas of the Romantic period\, a story of passion and blood\, love and vengeance\, disaster and murder. \nNew in the 2015/16 Season\, this atmospheric and poetic staging by director David Bösch puts the story of passion against the backdrop of war. Fire and snow in the landscape echo the cruelty and love of the story: soldiers and gypsies clash\, a mother reveals a terrible secret and two men are engaged in a deadly fight for one woman. The famous Anvil Chorus is just one of the highlights of Verdi’s exceptionally fine music\, which captures the shifting emotions of the drama through impassioned love duets\, fiery solos and stirring choruses.
