SUMMARY:Susan Adrian & her new book Forever Neverland
DESCRIPTION:Kids 8-12/ Susan Adrian in Conversation with Anne Nesbet\n\n\n\n\ndiscussing Adrian’s new book\, Forever Neverland\, a contemporary sequel to J. M. Barrie’s timeless classic Peter Pan. \n“A magical ode to childhood that updates the classic while keeping its flavor.”–Kirkus Reviews  \n“One of the best representations of autism in middle grade literature. A must purchase for all children who love magic and adventure\, especially those who have longed to see someone like Fergus on the page.”–Lizzie Huxley-Jones\, editor of Stim \nTo reserve your seat\, please purchase a copy of Forever Neverland by speaking to a bookseller or ordering from our website. Neurodiversity welcome. \n\n\n\n\n\nThursday\, August 8\, 2019 – 6:30pm\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat if Peter Pan wanted to take you to Neverland? Would you go? \nClover and Fergus are the great-great-grandchildren of Wendy Darling (yes\, that Wendy). And now Peter Pan wants to take them to Neverland for the adventure of their lives! But Clover is a little nervous–she’s supposed to look after her brother. Fergus is autistic\, and not everyone makes him feel welcome. What will happen to him in this magical world? \nFergus isn’t nervous at all. To him\, Neverland seems like a dream come true! He’s tired of Clover’s constant mothering and wants some independence\, like Peter and the Lost Boys have. He wonders\, Why can’t the real world be more like Neverland? \nNeverland is fun and free\, but it’s also dangerous and even scary at times. Unfamiliar creatures lurk in the shadows\, and strange sounds come from the waters. And then the mermaids start to go missing. . . . \nIn an imaginative and thoughtful continuation of the story of Peter Pan\, Susan Adrian explores Neverland with a fresh perspective and indelible warmth\, offering a new adventure based on a beloved classic! \nSusan Adrian is a fourth-generation Californian who somehow stumbled into living in Montana. By day she is a scientific editor\, and by night she dreams up wild adventures that sometimes turn into books. She is the author of the holiday fantasy Nutcracked and two thrilling books for teens. Follow her on Twitter @susanadrian and visit her on the web at susanadrian.net. \nAnne Nesbet is the author of The Orphan Band of Springdale\, Cloud and Wallfish\, The Wrinkled Crown\, A Box of Gargoyles\, and The Cabinet of Earths.

SUMMARY:EXHIBITION On Screen 2018/19 Season: Van Gogh & Japan
DESCRIPTION:Wed\, June 5 1 & 7pm & Wed\, July 10 4pm\n\nTo Purchase Tickets Click HERE \n“I envy the Japanese” Van Gogh wrote to his brother Theo. In the exhibition on which this film is based – VAN GOGH & JAPAN at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam – one can see why. Though Vincent van Gogh never visited Japan it is the country that had the most profound influence on him and his art. One cannot understand Van Gogh without understanding how Japanese art arrived in Paris in the middle of the 19th century and the profound impact it had on artists like Monet\, Degas and\, above all\, Van Gogh. \nVisiting the new galleries of Japanese art in Paris and then creating his own image of Japan – through in-depth research\, print collecting and detailed discussions with other artists – Van Gogh’s encounter with Japanese artworks gave his work a new and exciting direction. After leaving Paris for the south of France – to what he thought of as near to a kind of Japan as he could find – the productive and yet troubled years that followed must all be seen in the context of Van Gogh bending Japanese influences to his will and defining himself as a modern artist with clear Asian precursors. In this little known story of Van Gogh’s art we see just how important his study of Japan was. The film travels not only to France and the Netherlands but also to Japan to further explore the remarkable heritage that so affected Van Gogh and made him the artist we know of today. \n\n• OFFICIAL SITE   • TRAILER   • FACEBOOK

SUMMARY:Louise Aranson presents Elderhood: Redefining Aging\, Transforming Medicine\, Reimagining Life\, an essential\, empathetic look at a vital but little respected stage of life.
DESCRIPTION:Louise Aranson presents Elderhood: Redefining Aging\, Transforming Medicine\, Reimagining Life\, an essential\, empathetic look at a vital but little respected stage of life.\n\n\n\n\n“In the latter years there are possibilities for joy\, transcendence\, and meaning\, but also for just the opposite. Aronson writes like a memoirist while giving us scientific insight\, philosophical wisdom\, and wise counsel for a journey and destination we all share. Elderhood is a lovely and thoughtful exploration of this voyage.”–Abraham Verghese \nTo reserve your seat please purchase a copy of Elderhood by speaking to a bookseller or ordering through our website. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor more than 5\,000 years\, “old” has been defined as beginning between the ages of 60 and 70. That means most people alive today will spend more years in elderhood than in childhood\, and many will be elders for 40 years or more. Yet at the very moment that humans are living longer than ever before\, we’ve made old age into a disease\, a condition to be dreaded\, denigrated\, neglected\, and denied. \nReminiscent of Oliver Sacks\, noted Harvard-trained geriatrician Louise Aronson uses stories from her quarter century of caring for patients\, and draws from history\, science\, literature\, popular culture\, and her own life to weave a vision of old age that’s neither nightmare nor utopian fantasy–a vision full of joy\, wonder\, frustration\, outrage\, and hope about aging\, medicine\, and humanity itself. \nElderhood is for anyone who is\, in the author’s own words\, “an aging\, i.e.\, still-breathing human being.” \nLouise Aronson\, MD\, is the author of the story collection A History of the Present Illness and a geriatrician\, educator\, and professor of medicine at UCSF\, where she directs UCSF Medical Humanities. A graduate of Harvard Medical School and the MFA Program for Writers at Warren Wilson College\, Dr. Aronson has received numerous awards for her medical work\, teaching\, educational research\, and writing. The recipient of a MacDowell fellowship and four Pushcart nominations\, her articles and stories have appeared in many publications\, including The New York Times\, New England Journal of Medicine\, Lancet\, and Bellevue Literary Review.

SUMMARY:EXHIBITION On Screen 2018/19 Season: Van Gogh & Japan
DESCRIPTION:To Purchase Tickets Click HERE \n“I envy the Japanese” Van Gogh wrote to his brother Theo.

SUMMARY:Brandon Brown presents The Apollo Chronicles: Engineering America's First Moon Missions
DESCRIPTION:Brandon Brown presents The Apollo Chronicles: Engineering America’s First Moon Missions\, a uniquely earthbound story of space travel that follows a handful of surviving engineers from the time through their longest days\, tightest deadlines\, and most confounding challenges.\n\n\n\n\n[Brown] has captured the soul of what was arguably the most challenging and significant engineering accomplishment of the 20th century…a great read for all audiences…I learned things about ‘my era’ that I never knew!”–Gerry Griffin\, Former Director of the Johnson Space Center\, and former flight director for the Apollo Program \nTo reserve your seat\, purchase a copy of The Apollo Chronicles by speaking to a bookseller or ordering through our website. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe moon landing of 1969 stands as an iconic moment for both the United States and humankind. The familiar story focuses on the journey of the brave astronauts\, who brought home Moon rocks and startling photographs. But Apollo’s full account includes the earthbound engineers\, mounds of their crumpled paper\, and smoldering metal shards of exploded engines. How exactly did the nation\, step by difficult step\, take men to the Moon and back? \nIn The Apollo Chronicles\, fifty years after the moon landing\, author Brandon R. Brown\, himself the son of an Apollo engineer\, revisits the men and women who toiled behind the lights. He relays the defining twentieth-century project from its roots\, bringing the engineers’ work and personalities to bright life on the page. Set against the backdrop of a turbulent American decade\, the narrative whisks audiences through tense deadlines and technical miracles\, from President John F. Kennedy’s 1961 challenge to NASA’s 1969 lunar triumph\, as engineers confronted wave after wave of previously unthinkable challenges. \nBrown immerses readers in key physical hurdles–from building the world’s most powerful rockets to keeping humans alive in the hostile void of space–using language free of acronyms and technical jargon. The book also pulls back from the detailed tasks and asks larger questions. What did we learn about the Moon? And what can this uniquely innovative project teach us today? \nBrandon R. Brown is a Professor of Physics at USF. His research includes work on superconductivity and sensory biophysics. He enjoys writing about science for general audiences\, including articles and essays in New Scientist\, SEED\, and the Huffington Post\, as well as a biography\, Planck\, that won the 2016 Housatonic Award for Nonfiction.
