SUMMARY:The Rape of Recy Taylor
DESCRIPTION:Recy Taylor\, a 24-year-old black mother and sharecropper\, was gang raped by six white boys in 1944 Alabama. Common in Jim Crow South\, few women spoke up in fear for their lives. Not Recy Taylor\, who bravely identified her rapists. The NAACP sent its chief rape investigator Rosa Parks\, who rallied support and triggered an unprecedented outcry for justice. \n\nOur film exposes a legacy of physical abuse of black women and reveals Rosa Parks’ intimate role in Recy Taylor’s story. An attempted rape against Parks was but one inspiration for her ongoing work to find justice for countless women like Taylor. The 1955 bus boycott was an end result\, not a beginning. \nMore and more women are now speaking up after rape. Our film tells the story of black women who spoke up when danger was greatest; it was their noble efforts to take back their bodies that led to the Montgomery Bus Boycott and movements that followed. The 2017 Global March by Women is linked to their courage. From sexual aggression on ’40s southern streets to today’s college campuses and to the threatened right to choose\, it is control of women’s bodies that powered the movement in Recy Taylor’s day and fuels our outrage today. \n\nA Benefit for Bay Area Women Against Rape

SUMMARY:Indie Lens Pop-Up: Look & See Wendell Berry
DESCRIPTION:Indie Lens Pop-Up\nFree Showing!\n\nWed\, Apr 11 7pm \nLOOK & SEE revolves around the divergent stories of several residents of Henry County\, Kentucky who each face difficult choices that will dramatically reshape their relationship with the land and their community. \nIn 1965\, Wendell Berry returned home to Henry County\, where he bought a small farm house and began a life of farming\, writing and teaching. This lifelong relationship with the land and community would come to form the core of his prolific writings. A half century later Henry County\, like many rural communities across America\, has become a place of quiet ideological struggle. In the span of a generation\, the agrarian virtues of simplicity\, land stewardship\, sustainable farming\, local economies and rootedness to place have been replaced by a capital-intensive model of industrial agriculture characterized by machine labor\, chemical fertilizers\, soil erosion and debt – all of which have frayed the fabric of rural communities. Writing from a long wooden desk beneath a forty-paned window\, Berry has watched this struggle unfold\, becoming one of its most passionate and eloquent voices in defense of agrarian life. \nFilmed across four seasons in the farming cycle\, LOOK & SEE blends observational scenes of farming life\, interviews with farmers and community members with evocative\, carefully framed shots of the surrounding landscape. Thus\, in the spirit of Berry’s agrarian philosophy\, Henry County itself will emerge as a character in the film – a place and a landscape that is deeply interdependent with the people that inhabit it.

SUMMARY:Jacqueline Winspear reads from her new Maisie Dobbs mystery\, To Die But Once.
DESCRIPTION:  \nTo reserve your seat\, purchase a copy of To Die But Once by calling the store (510) 704-8222 and speaking to one of our booksellers. \n\n\n\n\n\nDuring the months following Britain’s declaration of war on Germany\, Maisie Dobbs investigates the disappearance of a young apprentice working on a hush-hush government contract. As news of the plight of thousands of soldiers stranded on the beaches of France is gradually revealed to the general public\, and the threat of invasion rises\, another young man beloved by Maisie makes a terrible decision that will change his life forever.\n\n\n\n\n\nMaisie’s investigation leads her from the countryside of rural Hampshire to the web of wartime opportunism exploited by one of the London underworld’s most powerful men\, in a case that serves as a reminder of the inextricable link between money and war. Yet when a final confrontation approaches\, she must acknowledge the potential cost to her future–and the risk of destroying a dream she wants very much to become reality. \nJacqueline Winspear’s  bestselling Maisie Dobbs series includes In This Grave Hour\, Journey to Munich\, A Dangerous Place\, Leaving Everything Most Loved\, Elegy for Eddie\, and eight other novels. Her standalone novel\, The Care and Management of Lies\, was also a New York Times bestseller and a Dayton Literary Peace Prize finalist. Originally from the United Kingdom\, Winspear now lives in California.

SUMMARY:Surprise Me! How the Unexpected Powers Your Writing with Author Ann Jacobus
DESCRIPTION:This is a Society of Children’s Book Writers & Illustrators event\, and it is open to the public. All writers are welcome! To reserve your seat\, buy a ticket. \n\n\n\n\nWe may crave order and predictability in our lives\, but in stories and poetry\, humans of all ages thrive on surprise. In fact\, an area of our brains is hard-wired to derive pleasure from it. Why? Because the unexpected shakes up our assumptions. Employed well\, it hooks and engages the reader\, gives pleasure\, shapes and then transforms the reader’s perceptions\, and is one of\, if not the most\, fundamental elements of story. \nJoin us as author Ann Jacobus uses examples from children’s fiction\, ranging from Dav Pilkey to Rainbow Rowell\, and exercises involving our current projects\, to explore how the unexpected works in almost all elements of writing: in language; in humor; as an integral part of character\, and as a powerful engine for plot. Understanding how and why surprise works is guaranteed to make us stronger writers. \nAnn Jacobus is the author of YA novel\, Romancing the Dark in the City of Light (Macmillan 2015)\, a suicide crisis line counselor\, mom\, writing teacher\, and reader. She earned an MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults from VCFA\, and has published short stories\, poetry\, essays\, and recently completed a chapter book for younger readers that’s currently on submission. She lives in San Francisco with her family and dog Louie\, and enjoys long walks and binge-watching cable series.
