SUMMARY:Joyce Carol Oates reads from her new collection of short stories\, Beautiful Days\, which includes the 2017 Pushcart Prize-winning "Undocumented Alien."
DESCRIPTION:In the diverse stories of Beautiful Days\, Joyce Carol Oates explores the most secret\, intimate\, and unacknowledged interior lives of characters not unlike ourselves\, who assert their independence in acts of bold and often irrevocable defiance. \n“Fleuve Bleu” exemplifies the rich sensuousness of Oates’s prose as lovers married to other persons vow to establish\, in their intimacy\, a ruthlessly honest\, truth-telling authenticity missing elsewhere in their complicated lives\, with unexpected results. In “Big Burnt\,” set on lushly rendered Lake George in the Adirondacks\, a cunningly manipulative university professor exploits a too-trusting woman in a way she could never have anticipated. In a more experimental but no less intimate mode\, “Les beaux jours” examines the ambiguities of an intensely erotic\, exploitative relationship between a “master” artist and his adoring young female model. And the tragic “Undocumented Alien” depicts a young African student enrolled in an American university who is suddenly stripped of his student visa and forced to undergo a terrifying test of courage. \nIn these stories\, as elsewhere in her fiction\, Joyce Carol Oates exhibits her fascination with the social\, psychological\, and moral boundaries that govern our behavior–until the hour when they do not.

SUMMARY:National Theatre Live: Cat on a Hot Tin Roof
DESCRIPTION:Feb 27\, Mar 1\, 6 & 8 7pm\n\nBy Tennessee Williams\nDirected by Benedict Andrews\nstarring Sienna Miller & Jack O’Connell \n★★★★\n“Sienna Miller and Jack O’Connell get to a raw and naked truth.”\nMetro \n★★★★\n“A brilliant\, lacerating account of the play…unforgettable.”\nIndependent \n★★★★\n“A bold reimagining. Innovative and powerfully acted. “ Sunday Times \nTennessee Williams’ twentieth century masterpiece Cat on a Hot Tin Roof played a strictly limited season in London’s West End in 2017. Following his smash hit production of A Streetcar Named Desire\, Benedict Andrews’ ‘thrilling revival’ (New York Times) stars Sienna Miller alongside\, Jack O’Connell and Colm Meaney. “A bold reimagining…innovative and powerfully acted” raves The Sunday Times. While The Independent calls Andrews’ production “A brilliant\, lacerating account of the play… unforgettable.” And The Metro raves “Miller and O’Connell get to a raw and naked truth.” \nOn a steamy night in Mississippi\, a Southern family gather at their cotton plantation to celebrate Big Daddy’s birthday. The scorching heat is almost as oppressive as the lies they tell. Brick and Maggie dance round the secrets and sexual tensions that threaten to destroy their marriage. With the future of the family at stake\, which version of the truth is real – and which will win out?

SUMMARY:Marilyn Yalom Presents The Amorous Heart: An Unconventional History of Love.
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\n\n\nThe symmetrical\, exuberant heart is everywhere: it gives shape to candy\, pendants\, the frothy milk on top of a cappuccino\, and much else. How can we explain the ubiquity of what might be the most recognizable symbol in the world? In The Amorous Heart\, Yalom tracks the heart metaphor and heart iconography across two thousand years\, through Christian theology\, pagan love poetry\, medieval painting\, Shakespearean drama\, Enlightenment science\, and into the present. She argues that the symbol reveals a tension between love as romantic and sexual on the one hand\, and as religious and spiritual on the other. Ultimately\, the heart symbol is a guide to the astonishing variety of human affections\, from the erotic to the chaste and from the unrequited to the conjugal.\n\n\n\n\n\nMarilyn Yalom is a senior scholar at the Clayman Institute for Gender Research at Stanford University\, and the author of How the French Invented Love\, among other books.

SUMMARY:Jane Anne Staw reads from her personal essay collection\, Small: The Little We Need for Happiness.
DESCRIPTION:In this brilliant essay collection\, Jane Anne Staw invites the reader to journey with her as she discovers how to shift her gaze to small–and finds her way out of feelings of overwhelm and anxiety. Through example\, Small teaches us how to see and connect to what is best in life\, at a time when philosophers and psychologists are suggesting that we slow down in order to thrive in a world of turmoil\, speed and excess information.
